Visit the Chicago Public Library's Timeline of Chicago History for a synopsis of important events in our city's past. The City of Big Shoulders is also the city of big projects! Read about the 1855 street level change, the completion of the Union Stockyards (1865), the opening of the Sears Tower (1973), the reversal of the Chicago River (1900), Daniel Burnham's 1909 Chicago Plan—the first comprehensive urban planning document in the United States, The World's Columbian Exposition (1893), and the 1933-1934 World's Fair: The Century of Progress.

The Windy City is also the stormy city! Learn about the Fort Dearborn Massacre before this swampy land of wild onions was Chicago, the Lager Beer Riots (March & April 1855) of German saloon keepers who felt discriminated against by the Sunday closing laws, the Haymarket Riot (May 4, 1886) where a bomb went off as police attempted to disperse an anarchist-led labor rally, the Pullman Strike (1894) that forever changed the nature of labor/management relations in America, the West Side Riots that took place between 1966 and 1977, and the anti-war demonstrations and disturbances that occurred during the Democratic National Convention (August 1968).

Some other tragic episodes that Chicago has weathered: The Great Chicago Fire (October 8-10, 1871), the Iroquois Theater Fire (December 30, 1903), the Sinking of the Eastland, and the Our Lady of the Angels School Fire (December 1, 1958).
