Author Bio: Mark Skertic |
Mark Skertic was born in East Chicago, Indiana, and raised in neighboring Hammond. Like many in the area, most of his family made their living working in The Region's mills. He first learned local history from his grandfather, the late Joseph Klen, a one-time state legislator and mayor of Hammond. Currently a reporter with the Chicago Tribune, he moved back to Northwest Indiana in the late 1990s. His newspaper career has encompassed covering the Calumet Region for the Chicago Sun-Times, editing and reporting for the Times of Northwest Indiana, and several years with the Cincinnati Enquirer. In his free time, Mark, his wife Alison, and their two daughters enjoy exploring the dunes, hiking, and spending time on the beach.
